Treatment of Cervical Spine Tuberculosis with Neural Involvement

Abstract
|
|
|
In about 50 per cent of all cases of`skeletal tuberculosis the spine is involved. Neural involvement in most dreaded and crippling complication of spinal tuberculosis. Many surgeons have reported mechanism and treatment for the neural involvement in spinal tuberculosis since 1892, when Menard inadvertently opened a paraspinal abscess while performing thoracic laminectomy for paraplegia.
In this paper the results of treatment upon six cases of neural involved cervical spine tuberculosis treated through the year 1959 to 1973 is reported.
1. Three cases out of six were in age between one to ten years. The incidence was remarkably higher in children.
2. Four cases out of six were treated by anti-tuberculous chemotherapy before admission for average duration two mofiths.
3. Two cases out of ´six were operated by curettage, other four cases operated by curettage and anterior spinal fusion.
4. In cases of anterior spinal fusion immobilization was done by Minerva jacket for six months.
5. Neural complications started to show recovery in one to four weeks after operation.
6. Walking and normal life without any complaint on cervical spine started seven to 14 months after operation. The average duration was 12 months.
7. Anti-tuberculous chemotherapy was lasted for 18 months after operation.
